Over the past 30 years of his career, Lex has built exceptionally strong credentials in the design of versatile, cost-effective and energy-efficient data center infrastructure. He has supervised the design and build process for more than 70 data centers and developed close to 600,000 m² of gross space with over 300,000 m² net space across Western Europe and Africa.
In his current role as Chief Datacenter Technology and Engineering Officer at Digital Realty, Lex has pioneered several new approaches to data center design and management, including the improvement of power ratio efficiency between server load and transformer load, and the industry’s first ever modular approach to data center architecture.
Lex is a Visiting Professor at the University of East London working on the data center challenges of Sustainability and Energy efficiency. Further, Lex is Board member of the Climate Neutral Datacenter Pact, Chair of the EUDCA Policy Committee where he engages with EU Policymakers, Board member of the EUDCA, Stakeholder at the EU JRC since the start in for the European Code of Conduct for datacenter efficiency and he is member of the iMasons Advisory Council and Governing Body, where he helped develop the Climate Accord/Carbon Tracker with Maturity model.
Lex received the Personal Judges Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Data Center industry in 2010 by Broadgroup, 2016 by DCD, and again 2021 by Data Centre Dynamics. Most recently in 2022, he received the Technology Champion Award during the iMasons Awards Ceremony for his outstanding contribution to technology in the digital infrastructure industry.
