Venkat is the Director of Engineering Software at Makai Ocean Engineering. In addition to overseeing the activities of the commercial submarine cable group, he is also involved with Makai’s R&D work in seafloor classification, object detection, dynamics path planning, etc. Makai’s cable group maintains the industry-leading software MakaiPlan for route planning and MakaiLay for installation management of submarine cables. In recent years, the group’s focus has been additional automation of many of the planning as well as installation tasks. He joined Makai Ocean Engineering in 2009, after earning his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University
